Language of Light

Covers the lighting philosophy of Richard Kelly, its implications on the design process and a demonstration of its use as a simple communication tool.  Language of Light also covers recent developments in technology, with a focus on how to provide the optimum balance between efficiency and visual comfort.  This workshop allows you to feel how different lighting effects can influence user experience and the perception of interior spaces in a flexible and interactive workshop space.

Dark Sky

The Dark Sky program at ERCO provides an overview of how light pollution threatens to impact the sustainability of our natural and built environments.  The lighting philosophies of Richard Kelly and their implications on the design process from an exterior and landscape perspective are covered.  This topic demonstrates and explains how different lighting effects can influence user experience and the perception of exterior spaces.  A one-hour evening walking tour of Sydney CBD commencing at Sydney Observatory incorporates real world examples of lighting with a ‘Dark Sky’ approach for exterior and landscape lighting.  Through discussion and demonstration, explanation is given as to how more effort is needed to control the quantity, direction and composition of light in order to improve outcomes for architecture, health and the environment.

Light for Offices

The debate concerning attractive, creatively stimulating and flexible office worlds is in full swing but a significant component of office equipment is still observed quantitatively, including the lighting.  Light is essential in knowledge-orientated work environments that focus on people; light contributes to the quality of the room and supports dialogue and concentration.  We show you what lighting concepts look like that meet the needs of a dynamic, digitally networked knowledge society.  This topic explains how different lighting effects can influence the perception of workplaces.  There is also discussion of technical and commercial issues with a demonstration of the flexibility provided by digital light in a creative and interactive environment.

Light for Public Buildings

What binds our society together, allows it to function and makes it worth living?  This topic considers how to successfully light community buildings and spaces in which people as visitors, citizens or politicians move, gather and exchange information.  Discussion and demonstration is provided on qualitative lighting techniques for what are often large spaces in buildings such as public administration centres, educational facilities, libraries, entertainment venues, transport interchanges and airports.  Explanation is given as to how lighting can be used to enhance architecture and support social needs.  Creating new features or maintaining existing structures provides both opportunities and responsibilities for planners and designers.  Care and quality in all planning aspects are critical.  Light assumes much more than just functionality it also determines the character and representative symbolic force of public buildings.

Light for Art

Collecting, conserving, researching and exhibiting – these keystones of museum activities were established more than 200 years ago as part of the European Enlightenment and characterise work in public museums, galleries and private collections up to the current day.  Each of these individual artistic spheres is now provided with suitable lighting thanks to the possibilities of high-quality LED lighting, without having to compromise in terms of visual experience and conservation.  This topic explains lighting possibilities in museums and galleries for the display of art.  We also show you how light is able to upgrade exhibition spaces to become qualitative cultural brands – ranging from the exhibition and sculpture garden to the shop and café.

Light for Shopping

In this era of online shopping the innate strength of over-the-counter retailing is to be found in the real, spatial experiencing of brands and merchandise.  This topic explains how light not only presents the products, but also determines the atmosphere, and therefore enhances the customer experience.  We demonstrate how light is presented in seductive or tempting ways to elevate merchandise.  Further discussion covers the unique presentation of space and products with the use of light, to become an essential component for dialogue with customers.

Long perceived to be immune from such problems, ‘the lucky county’ has seen an increase in the occurrence and severity of condensation problems across disparate climate zones as standard designs start to fail. An ABCB nationwide survey estimates that about 40% of new buildings suffer from condensation or mould.  The NCC 2019 includes for the first time a dedicated condensation management section under health and amenity.

The presentation considers the role played by various control layers and how they impact design and specification to aid the understanding and effective management of condensation risk.

Safety in Design for Working at Height

Australia’s Safe Design of Structures Code of Practice demands designers eliminate hazards – whether in the construction phase or the decades of maintenance that follow – even before they are created. It sets out specific steps for designers at each stage, including predesign, the conceptual and schematic design phase, design development phase, and review of control measures.

In the Safety in Design for Working at Height CPD Presentation, Workplace Access & Safety will demonstrate how to practically implement Australia’s Safe Design of Structures Code of Practice so architects can meet their safety in design obligations.

Participants completing the Safety in Design for Working at Heights workshop will be able to:

8. Identify key risks areas to consider when designing a building

10. Understand what documents are required for handover including user manuals, rigging/layout plans; commissioning testing information; manufacturers test reports; risk assessments and controls.
