As our name suggests, Big Ass Fans isn't your traditional business. While the quirky name understandably garners a lot of attention, it's serious work behind the scenes that drives our continued success in industrial, commercial and residential spaces. Our provocative moniker originated with the massive overhead fans we perfected to bring comfort and energy savings to similarly sized industrial buildings. Today Big Ass Fans is much more than industrial. Big Ass means quality, form and function to solve problems in the built environment.

So what the heck does that mean? It's having a veritable herd of engineers on staff and the world's only R&D facility (which is LEED® Gold, no less) dedicated to testing air movement on a grand scale. It's speaking to our customers directly to understand and solve their problems. But mostly it's an insatiable drive to improve, engineer, design, test, re-engineer, re-design and re-test until we get it just right. And then start over again. It's applying our Big Ass approach to other problems, and inventing or reinventing solutions. We don't do things half-ass. We go Big Ass. And that's precisely why there's No Equal™.

The Workplace Revolution is Here
Brought to you by the minds behind Indesign Magazine, the lively and heated WorkLife Seminar Series put a spotlight on A+D in a wholly new way.

Mobile Working Is The New Agile: How To Design An Office For The ‘Out Of Office’ Workforce

Thirty years ago ‘going to work’ meant going to an office to complete set tasks. Today it means going to ______ to work. Between the two redefinitions lies a social, cultural and grammatical change: ‘work’ is no longer a noun, no longer a ‘given place’. As a result of mobile working options, the commercial sector is being revolutionised by other aspects of our industry: including hospitality spaces and residential environments. Is this the end of the ‘Office’? Or is it simply the end as we know it?
Kitsch Please! How Our Industry Can Disrupt and Experiment Without Getting ‘Naff’
Today, our workplaces are diverse hubs of design politics. Everything from agility to ABW to cubicles and change management carries enormous political clout. There is, however, a growing trend in this space to investigate the truly unique working models and design solutions which govern extreme workplaces. Whether in outer space, the deep sea, on the road or in the sky, how has design-thinking and engineering innovations in the commercial sector embraced its inner-weird?
Hot Enough To Hashtag: A+D In The Social Media World
As the marketing and media landscape continues to change every day, never has building and sustaining brand equity been harder. But, while this is the case, there’s a strong argument being put forward for investing our marketing activities in new channels. The word ‘influencer’ seems to be thrown about a little too recklessly – but is there a lesson or two the A+D community can take from the world of avant-garde social media? Here we get to grips with the politics of ‘likes’, alternative marketing, and prolonging the reach of our digital presence through social media.

Talking ‘bout Your Generation: Intergenerational Co-Habiting and Residential Design

Throughout the world, two things in particular are forcing us to live in a radically different manner than heretofore: (1) the ever-rising overheads of a voracious property market, and (2) our ever-increasing life expectancy and ageing population. How has the design world approached re-thinking the residential environment to accommodate the multiple needs of many generations in the single domicile?
Design Identities of Australia: Communities in Design

Identity is a hotly contested philosophical arena – and, rightly so. But especially for our creative community, expressing identity through design carries a significantly broad array of integral stakeholders we need to consider. Across Australia, the Indigenous design world is leading the charge for reconsidering the role design plays in expressing the identity of communities.
Size and the City: Our Developers Have Some Explaining To Do

Every year we are informed that urban density across the entire Asia Pacific region has reached a record high. While our collective population continues to increase alongside the growing strain on our urban environments, we look to our developers and urban planners to provide solution. Whether you call it ‘small living’, ‘slow living’, ‘low density’ or ‘high sprawl’, where does the urban planner fit within the A+D community? And, more pointedly, what can we learn from development experiments around the world?

Instyle has evolved over the last 30 years largely by adapting to the market and addressing its clients ever-changing needs. This has been in direct response to the way interior spaces constantly change, demanding new materials with added functionality and a fresh contemporary aesthetic.

Workplaces have opened up by adopting open-plan, collaborative working spaces, while bars and restaurants have incorporated hard, sound-reverberating surfaces. Both of these trends have resulted in increased noise and disruption, driving the demand for sound absorbing materials.Instyle’s intelligent Ecoustic collection features sophisticated and highly functional acoustic panels, screens and tiles for walls and ceilings. Our wide range of acoustic products are designed for the environment, easy to install and provide sound absorption to reduce and control reverberated noise in building interiors.

Instyle is an ethical and environmentally responsible company with a holistic approach to sustainability. Since beginning its sustainability journey in 2002, Instyle has established itself as an industry leader through its development of LIFE Textiles and Ecoustic.

Integrity is at the core of Instyle and this extends to its approach that acoustics are a fundamental aspect of interior design. With an understanding of the critical nature of interior acoustics, materials and systems, Instyle has developed a CPD series for architects.

Instyle's CPD series encompasses physics of sound, human reaction to noise and sound, room acoustics and design considerations for education, public spaces, workplaces, multipurpose halls and restaurants.

Our experience with architects has taught us that while many have an affinity with timber and timber products, some are wary of timber’s natural variation which has the potential to result in outcomes which may vary from the design brief and from client expectations.

With this is mind, our presentation covers everything from resource procurement to lacquers, and everything in between, with the objective of giving an understanding of all aspects of timber veneers. Through this understanding, participants gain the ability to specify beautiful, unique and natural timber veneers with confidence.

Nucleus designs events that keep architects and designers in Australia up to date with the latest industry developments.

Our upcoming event focuses on the issue of 'Facade Compliancy'. Expert speaker, Jonathan Barnett, Technical Director at Red Fire Engineers will provide attendees with a greater understanding of Aluminium Composite, it’s inherent risks and recommended uses. Jonathan will also give a step-by-step guide on how to specify cladding and wall systems on commercial buildings and will look at building access and ongoing serviceability issues as a result of these rulings.

With the building industry and facade cladding in particular having been in the spotlight since the Lacrosse apartment building fire and the ABCB recently issuing their Practice Note in late August, Jonathan will also outline the implications of this and how to interpret these new rulings to ensure façade compliancy on past, current and future projects.

Our Speaker

Safety in Design for Working at Height

Australia’s Safe Design of Structures Code of Practice demands designers eliminate hazards – whether in the construction phase or the decades of maintenance that follow – even before they are created. It sets out specific steps for designers at each stage, including predesign, the conceptual and schematic design phase, design development phase, and review of control measures.

In the Safety in Design for Working at Height CPD Presentation, Workplace Access & Safety will demonstrate how to practically implement Australia’s Safe Design of Structures Code of Practice so architects can meet their safety in design obligations.

Participants completing the Safety in Design for Working at Heights workshop will be able to:

  1. Identify and understand the legislative framework and your duties and obligations
  2. Gain an understanding of the Australian Standards relating to safe access and height safety
  3. Understand how the Code of Practice Safe Design of Structures applies to their role and
  4. Apply the Code of Practice Safe Design of Structures to when designing access for working at height safelyeagl

Frequently asked questions – information for providers of CPD

1. What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Architects is any activity that enhances the professional knowledge and personal skills needed for the advancement of architecture, society and the environment.

Key requirements of CPD for Architects are that an activity:

  • relates to the practice of architecture but is not an activity undertaken in the normal course of practice
  • has stated learning outcomes/objectives, demonstrating that the primary purpose of the activity is educational
  • relates to at least one of the National Competency Standards for Architecture: Design, Documentation, Project Delivery, Practice Management

2. What are the competency standards?

The National Competency Standards in Architecture (NCSA) is a document published by The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) setting out the benchmark standards of competency for registration as an architect in Australia and New Zealand.

The NCSA can be found under publications at

3. Is CPD compulsory for architects?

CPD is compulsory in WA, NSW, Queensland and Tasmania. It is expected to soon become compulsory for architects in other states in Australia. CPD is also compulsory for A+ members of the Australian Institute of Architects. Architects are advised to do CPD to continually develop their professional skills and knowledge within the industry.

4. Should providers maintain records of attendance?

Architects are required to manage their own CPD records. The Institute provides a sample CPD record form for members, available for download. However, CPD providers must also maintain records of attendance for each CPD activity.

5. How long should a CPD provider maintain records?

You must maintain records relating to each CPD activity for a period of five years.

6. Are CPD points recognised Australia-wide?

Yes. The Institute allocates points to activities in alignment with the requirements of its own policy and policies/guidelines of other registration bodies.

7. Are providers allowed to use the Australian Institute of Architects corporate logo?

No. All Refuel CPD Provider Network members are supplied with Refuel CPD Provider Network logos and CPD points badges for use on marketing materials. Marketing materials must accurately advertise the program length, CPD points available, learning objectives and any costs associated with the program.

8. How are points allocated?

Points are allocated on the basis of one (1) point for every hour of involvement for both formal and informal activities.

In some cases, limits have been applied to the number of points that can be allocated to a single activity. While these tend to apply to less structured-generally informal-activities such as reading or attending meetings, some formal CPD activities also have limits.

Points can only be allocated to the educational components of an event: refreshment breaks, registration, drinks/networking sessions and the like, do not accrue points.

9. What is Refuel?
